Ajay Mitchell

Ajay Mitchell (born June 25, 2002) is a Belgian-American professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and is the second Belgian player to win an NBA championship, accomplishing this feat as a rookie with the Thunder in 2025. Standing 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and weighing 190 pounds (86 kg), Mitchell plays both guard positions and is known for his basketball IQ, efficiency, and ability to make winning plays.

Early Life and Amateur Career

Mitchell was born in Ans, Belgium, and attended Community School Sainte-Marie in Namur, Belgium. Growing up, he played both soccer and basketball, dreaming of becoming either the next Kevin De Bruyne or the next Jalen Brunson. At age 14, he chose to pursue basketball exclusively due to Belgium’s lack of high school sports and overlapping seasons between sports.

At age 17, Mitchell moved to France for several months, playing 13 games for the under-18 team of Nanterre 92, where he was teammates with future NBA star Victor Wembanyama. In 2019, Mitchell joined Limburg United’s youth team in Belgium and made two appearances with the senior team in the Pro Basketball League during the 2019–20 season. He played solely with the senior team during the 2020–21 season while maintaining his amateur status.

College Career

Mitchell committed to UC Santa Barbara and played three seasons for the Gauchos from 2021 to 2024. His impact was immediate—he was named Big West Freshman of the Year in 2022 after appearing in 27 games.

As a sophomore (2022-23), Mitchell averaged 16.3 points and 5.1 assists per game, earning Big West Player of the Year, Big West Championship MVP, and All-Big West First Team honors. He shot over 50% from the field for the second consecutive season.

In his junior season (2023-24), Mitchell elevated his game to another level. He started all 29 games he appeared in (missing only two due to injury) and averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 50.4% from the field. He finished second in the Big West in both field goal percentage and points per game. Mitchell scored 30 or more points in four games, including a school road record 39 points against UC Riverside on December 30, 2023, and 37 points against Long Beach State on March 7, 2024. He earned All-Big West First Team, NABC All-District 9 First Team, and Big West All-Academic Team honors.

Following his junior season, Mitchell declared for the 2024 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

Oklahoma City Thunder (2024–present)

On June 27, 2024, Mitchell was selected with the 38th overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 2024 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for the 40th overall pick and cash. He signed a two-way contract with the Thunder on July 6, 2024.

Rookie Season (2024-25)

Mitchell earned significant playing time from the start, appearing in all of Oklahoma City’s first 34 games and averaging 6.4 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 16.6 minutes per game. He was one of only two rookies shooting at least 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range during that stretch, while the Thunder compiled a 29-5 record.

On January 10, 2025, Mitchell was ruled out for 10-12 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a turf toe sprain in his right foot. On February 6, 2025, the Thunder converted his two-way contract to a standard two-year deal. Mitchell returned from injury to contribute during Oklahoma City’s playoff run to the NBA Finals.

On June 22, 2025, the Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers 4-3 in the NBA Finals, making Mitchell an NBA champion in his rookie season. He became the second Belgian NBA champion after D.J. Mbenga. On June 30, 2025, Mitchell re-signed with the Thunder on a three-year, $9 million contract.

Sophomore Season (2025-26)

Mitchell’s second season has featured a dramatic increase in production. Through February 2026, he is averaging 14.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game while emerging as a leading candidate for the Sixth Man of the Year award. Teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander praised Mitchell’s basketball feel, stating: “He just understands how to play… He just goes out there and figures out a way, makes the right basketball play, plays hard and wins.”

Mitchell has dealt with an abdominal strain, missing games including the February 7, 2026 contest against Houston, and is listed as day-to-day as of February 8, 2026.

International Career

Mitchell has represented Belgium in international competition. He played for Belgium’s under-18 team before making his senior national team debut at age 18 in 2021.
