Michael Lamar Porter Jr. (born June 29, 1998), nicknamed “MPJ,” is an American professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Standing 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 m) and weighing 218 pounds (99 kg), Porter plays small forward and power forward. 

 

He played one injury-plagued season of college basketball for the Missouri Tigers before being selected by the Nuggets with the 14th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Porter won his first NBA championship with Denver in 2023. He is the son of former college and professional basketball player Michael Porter Sr., and the brother of NBA player Jontay Porter and women’s college basketball player Bri Porter.

 

Early Life 

Family

Porter was born on June 29, 1998, in Columbia, Missouri, while his father, Michael Porter Sr,. was an assistant coach at the University of Missouri. The family later moved to Des Moines, Iowa, when his father became an assistant coach at Drake University. Porter comes from an extremely athletic family. His father played college basketball at New Orleans and professionally overseas, while his mother Lisa, was a Missouri women’s basketball player. His younger brother Jontay Porter was also drafted by the NBA (2019, 38th overall), and his sister Bri Porter played for Missouri’s collegiate team.

 

High School Career

 

Porter attended Father Tolton Catholic High School in Columbia, Missouri, for his first two years before transferring to Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington, where his father became head coach. As a senior at Nathan Hale in 2016-17, Porter averaged 36.2 points, 13.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.3 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game, leading his team to a Washington Class 3A state championship with a 29-0 record.

 

Porter was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year, USA Today Player of the Year, Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and McDonald’s All-American Game co-MVP (sharing the honor with Marvin Bagley III). He was ranked as the consensus top prospect in the 2017 recruiting class by all major recruiting services.

 

College Career

 

Porter committed to the University of Missouri on March 18, 2017, reuniting with his father, who had returned as an assistant coach. However, his college career was derailed by injury. During the team’s first official practice in November 2017, Porter suffered a back injury that required surgery to repair a herniated disc. He missed the entire regular season and made his college debut on March 8, 2018, in Missouri’s first game of the SEC Tournament, recording 12 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes.

 

Porter appeared in only three total games for Missouri, averaging 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds. Despite the limited sample size, he declared for the 2018 NBA Draft on April 3, 2018.

 

NBA Career

Denver Nuggets (2018-2025) 

Draft and Initial Injury (2018–2019)

 

On June 21, 2018, Porter was selected 14th overall by the Denver Nuggets, a significant draft-day slide from his expected lottery position due to injury concerns. The Nuggets bet on his long-term potential. However, Porter underwent a second back surgery on June 8, 2018, to address ongoing issues from his college injury and missed the entire 2018-19 season.

 

Emergence (2019–2023)

 

Porter made his NBA debut on November 14, 2019, recording five points and two rebounds in 10 minutes against Toronto. He gradually earned playing time, and on December 29, 2019, he scored a then-career-high 19 points against Phoenix. By the end of his rookie season, Porter was averaging 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in 55 games.

 

In the 2019-20 playoffs, Porter emerged as a key contributor. On September 15, 2020, he scored a playoff career-high 37 points with 12 rebounds in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Los Angeles Clippers, helping Denver complete a 3-1 series comeback.

 

Porter’s breakthrough came in 2020-21 when he averaged 19.0 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 44.5% from three-point range. On November 22, 2021, Denver signed Porter to a five-year, $207 million maximum contract extension.

 

Championship Season (2022–2023)

 

The 2022-23 season brought Porter’s ultimate achievement. He averaged 17.4 points and 5.3 rebounds during the regular season. In the NBA Finals against Miami, Porter delivered crucial performances, averaging 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 41.7% from three-point range. On June 12, 2023, Denver defeated Miami 94-89 in Game 5 to capture the franchise’s first NBA championship in history. Porter recorded 16 points and 13 rebounds in the clinching game.

Brooklyn Nets (2025-Present) 

 

On July 8, 2025, Porter was traded from Denver to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a deal that sent Cameron Johnson to the Nuggets. Through the 2025-26 season (as of February 10, 2026), Porter is averaging career-highs of 25.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game with the Nets, the best numbers of his career. He has emerged as Brooklyn’s primary offensive option.

 

Porter has been mentioned in trade rumors, with teams including the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors expressing interest. However, he has dealt with various injury issues throughout his career, including back problems, ankle injuries, and knee soreness, which have limited his availability at times.

Personal Life

 

Porter has been outspoken on various topics, including his Christian faith. He attended the same high school as NBA player Zach LaVine. Porter wears jersey number 1 and maintains an active presence on social media.
