Desmond Bane

Desmond Michael Bane (born June 25, 1998), nicknamed “Fly By King” and “FBK,” is an American professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Standing 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) and weighing 215 pounds (98 kg), Bane plays shooting guard. He played four years of college basketball for the TCU Horned Frogs, becoming the program’s all-time leader in three-pointers made.

Bane was selected 30th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2020 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He spent five seasons in Memphis before being traded to the Magic in June 2025. Bane is a two-time All-Big 12 selection and had his jersey retired by TCU in February 2025.

Early Life

Bane was born in Richmond, Indiana, and raised by his great-grandparents, Bob and Fabbie Bane, after moving in with them at age two.

High School Career

He attended Seton Catholic High School, a small private school in Richmond. As a senior, Bane averaged a state-high 30.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 3.2 blocks per game. He scored a school-record 62 points in a single game and finished his high school career with 1,991 points, the most in Wayne County history. Despite his prolific scoring, Bane received no Division I offers until his senior season when Furman extended a late scholarship offer. He committed to TCU in May 2016 and was not rated by major recruiting services.

College Career

TCU Horned Frogs (2016–2020)

Bane became one of TCU’s most decorated players in program history. As a freshman, he helped the Horned Frogs win the 2017 NIT championship, contributing nine points in the title game. The following season, TCU reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years. Bane improved each year steadily, averaging 7.1 points as a freshman, 12.5 points as a sophomore, and 15.2 points as a junior before breaking out as a senior.

In his senior season (2019-20), Bane averaged 16.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 44.2% from three-point range. He became the first TCU player to earn First Team All-Big 12 honors from the Associated Press. Bane never missed a game in his four-year career, playing in all 141 games, the most in program history. He finished as TCU’s all-time leader in three-pointers made (249), wins (84), and games played, while ranking third in career points (1,784). TCU retired his No. 1 jersey in February 2025, making him the sixth Horned Frog to receive this honor.

NBA Career

Memphis Grizzlies (2020–2025)

Bane was selected with the 30th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft by Boston but was traded to Memphis before his rookie season began. He earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors after shooting the highest three-point percentage by a rookie since Stephen Curry. On March 23, 2022, Bane set Memphis’s franchise record for three-pointers made in a season with 202, surpassing Mike Miller’s mark.

Bane’s breakout came in 2022-23 when he scored a career-high 49 points against Detroit on December 6, 2023. Following that season, he signed a five-year, $207 million extension, the largest contract in Grizzlies franchise history. In five seasons with Memphis, Bane averaged 17.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

Orlando Magic (2025–present)

On June 15, 2025, Bane was traded to Orlando in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and four first-round draft picks, one of the most significant trades of the 2025 offseason. He immediately became a key contributor alongside Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs.

Through the 2025-26 season, Bane is averaging 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 35.7% from three-point range, continuing to play a role as one of the NBA’s most reliable two-way shooting guards.
