Early Life

High School Career

Vassell was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and raised in Suwanee. He is the son of Cynthia and Andrew Vassell. His father played college basketball at Stony Brook and is of Jamaican descent, hailing from Runaway Bay. Vassell began playing basketball at the age of six, often competing against older children in local leagues.

He attended Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, where he was a late bloomer in the recruiting landscape. As a senior, Vassell averaged 21.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, leading his team to a regional championship. He was named the Gwinnett Daily Post regional Player of the Year. Despite his production, he was only a three-star recruit and chose Florida State University over offers from Texas Tech, North Florida, and Stetson.

College Career (2018–2020)

At Florida State, Vassell played under coach Leonard Hamilton, known for his deep rotations and defensive emphasis.

  • Freshman Season (2018–2019): Vassell played a reserve role, averaging 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. However, he demonstrated elite shooting potential, leading all ACC freshmen with a 41.9% three-point shooting percentage.
  • Sophomore Season (2019–2020): Vassell emerged as a national breakout star. He led the Seminoles in both scoring (12.7 ppg) and rebounding (5.1 rpg) while being second on the team in blocks, assists, and steals.

On February 1, 2020, he scored a career-high 27 points while going a perfect 7-for-7 from three-point range against Virginia Tech. He was named to the All-ACC Second Team and was a finalist for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. Following the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Vassell declared for the NBA Draft.

NBA Career

San Antonio Spurs (2020–present)

Vassell was the first lottery pick for the Spurs since Tim Duncan in 1997. He made his debut on December 23, 2020, and quickly earned a spot in coach Gregg Popovich’s rotation due to his defensive discipline.

Over his first few seasons, Vassell’s offensive role expanded significantly:

  • 2021–2022: He became a primary starter, averaging 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.
  • 2022–2023: Despite an arthroscopic knee procedure in January, he averaged a then-career-high 18.5 points per game.
