Joshua James Giddey (born October 10, 2002) is an Australian professional basketball player who plays for the Chicago Bulls in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Standing 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m) tall and weighing 216 pounds (98 kg), Giddey plays point guard, shooting guard, and forward positions.

Giddey was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Giddey currently has the honor of being the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, having done so at 19 years and 84 days old. He also became the first rookie since Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson in 1961 to record three consecutive triple-doubles.

Early Life

Family

Giddey was born on October 10, 2002, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to professional basketball players Kim and Warrick Giddey. His father Warrick, made the Australian Schoolboys teams in both rugby league and rugby union before playing for the Illawarra Hawks and Melbourne Tigers in the National Basketball League (NBL). His mother Kim, played for the Melbourne Tigers women’s basketball team in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). His sister Hannah played college basketball at Oral Roberts and Southern Nazarene University.

Professional Career in Australia

Rather than attending college in the United States, Giddey signed a professional contract with the Adelaide 36ers of the NBL in March 2020 as part of the league’s “Next Stars” program, designed to develop NBA draft prospects. In the 2020-21 season, he became the first Australian to record a triple-double in NBL history and the first to record triple-doubles in consecutive games.

On April 26, 2021, Giddey recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists against the New Zealand Breakers to become the youngest Australian in NBL history to record a triple-double. He followed with 15 points, 13 assists, and 11 rebounds on May 1 against Brisbane, and posted his third consecutive triple-double on May 9 against Sydney with 11 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. He averaged 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and a league-leading 7.6 assists in 28 games, earning NBL Rookie of the Year honors.

NBA Career

Oklahoma City Thunder (2021–2024)

On April 27, 2021, Giddey declared for the NBA Draft and was selected sixth overall by the Thunder on July 29. He made his NBA debut on October 20, 2021, against Utah, recording four points, 10 rebounds, and three assists, becoming the youngest Australian to play in the NBA.

On January 2, 2022, Giddey became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, posting 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 14 assists against Dallas. He did so, aged 19 years and 84 days, breaking the record held by LaMelo Ball (19 years, 140 days). He recorded consecutive triple-doubles on January 4 and 6, becoming the first rookie since Oscar Robertson in 1961 to notch three straight triple-doubles. He earned Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors four times and was named to the All-Rookie Second Team.

On January 11, 2024, Giddey made history by posting a triple-double on 100% field goal accuracy in under 25 minutes, recording 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists in 22 minutes against Portland, becoming the first player in NBA history to accomplish this feat.

On January 10, 2023, Giddey joined Luka Dončić, Ben Simmons, and Grant Hill as the only players in NBA history to record at least 1,000 points, 700 rebounds, and 500 assists in their first 100 career games.

However, his Thunder tenure ended amid reduced playing time during the 2023-24 season as Oklahoma City emerged as a championship contender. Giddey averaged just 12.4 points in 25.1 minutes per game and fell out of the rotation during the playoffs.

Chicago Bulls (2024–present)

On June 21, 2024, Giddey was traded to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for defensive specialist Alex Caruso. The trade proved transformative for both franchises. Caruso helped Oklahoma City win the 2025 NBA championship, while Giddey excelled in Chicago’s system.

In his first season with the Bulls (2024-25), Giddey posted career highs across multiple categories: 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists (team-high), and 1.2 steals per game. He became the second Bulls player ever to average at least 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists in a season, joining Michael Jordan. Giddey recorded 30 double-doubles (most by a Bulls guard since Jordan in 1988-89) and seven triple-doubles (second-most in Bulls history behind Jordan).

On March 22, 2025, Giddey became the first NBA player to record 15 points, 10 rebounds, 17 assists, and eight steals in a game against the Lakers. Over his final 30 games, he averaged 18.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 7.8 assists while shooting 49.0% from the field and 43.6% from three-point range.

In September 2025, Giddey signed a four-year, $100 million contract extension with Chicago.

International Career

Giddey has represented Australia extensively. At the 2019 FIBA Under-17 Oceania Championship, he averaged 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and five assists, leading Australia to a gold medal and earning All-Star Five honors. He made his senior national team debut in February 2020 during the FIBA Asia Cup qualification at age 17, becoming the youngest Boomer since Ben Simmons in 2013. He competed for Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
