Cade Cunningham

Cade Parker Cunningham (born September 25, 2001) is an American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, where he was named a consensus first-team All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year. The Pistons selected Cunningham with the first overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Standing 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) and weighing 220 pounds (100 kg), Cunningham plays both point guard and shooting guard positions.

With a three-time NBA All-Star (2023, 2024, 2026) and an All-NBA Third Team selection (2025), Cunningham has emerged as one of the league’s premier young players and leaders. Known for his exceptional court vision, versatility, clutch performances, and all-around game, he currently leads the NBA in assists per game (9.7) and ranks among the league’s top scorers.

Early Life

Cunningham was born on September 25, 2001, in Arlington, Texas. He initially attended Bowie High School in Arlington before transferring to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, for his senior season.

High School Career

At Montverde, he played for one of the most talented high school teams in history, leading them to a 25-0 record and the GEICO National Championship in 2020. As a senior, Cunningham averaged 17.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He was rated as a consensus five-star recruit and ranked among the top players in the 2020 class by major recruiting services. Cunningham was named a McDonald’s All-American, USA Today All-USA First Team, and received national player of the year recognition from MaxPreps. He committed to Oklahoma State over offers from Kentucky, North Carolina, Florida, and Kansas.

College Career

In his freshman season at Oklahoma State (2020-21), Cunningham immediately established himself as one of college basketball’s elite players. In his debut on November 25, 2020, he recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds in a win over UT Arlington. On February 27, 2021, he posted a career-high 40 points and 11 rebounds in an overtime victory against Oklahoma, becoming just the seventh player in Big 12 history with a 40-point, 10-rebound game and only the second freshman to achieve the feat after Michael Beasley and Trae Young.

Cunningham averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 43.8% from the field, 40.0% from three-point range, and 84.6% from the free-throw line. He ranked first among all college players in clutch-time scoring (within five points in the final five minutes), shooting 94% from the free-throw line in such situations.

His dominant season earned him consensus first-team All-American honors—the first Oklahoma State player to earn the distinction since Bob Kurland (1944-46). He became only the fourth player to win both Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Freshman of the Year in the same season, joining Marcus Smart, Kevin Durant, and Michael Beasley. He also received the Wayman Tisdale Award, Sporting News Freshman of the Year, and NABC Freshman of the Year honors.

Cunningham helped Oklahoma State reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, securing nine victories over ranked opponents. On April 1, 2021, he declared for the 2021 NBA Draft and was regarded as the consensus first overall pick.

NBA Career

Early Years (2021-2024)

The Detroit Pistons selected Cunningham with the first overall pick on July 29, 2021, making him the third first overall pick in franchise history after Bob Lanier (1970) and Jimmy Walker (1967). He signed a four-year rookie contract and made his NBA debut on October 23, 2021, recording 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in a win against Detroit.

Despite missing significant time due to a shin injury in his rookie season, Cunningham was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. On December 18, 2023, he scored a career-high 43 points against Atlanta during the Pistons’ historic 28-game losing streak that tied for the longest in NBA history.

All-Star Emergence (2024-Present)

The 2024-25 season marked a dramatic turning point for both Cunningham and the Pistons. He helped Detroit improve from 14-68 to 44-38, a 30-win improvement that earned the sixth seed. Cunningham averaged career highs in points, assists, and efficiency while being named a finalist for the NBA Most Improved Player Award, finishing third behind Dyson Daniels and Ivica Zubac.

On April 19, 2025, Cunningham made his playoff debut with 21 points, 12 assists, and six rebounds against the New York Knicks. In Game 4, he recorded his first playoff triple-double (25 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists), the third in Pistons franchise history. Despite his excellent all-round play, Detroit lost to New York in six games.

The 2025-26 season has seen Cunningham reach superstar status. On February 9, he scored 33 points in a 110-104 win over Charlotte that ended the Hornets’ nine-game winning streak, though the game was marred by a third-quarter brawl resulting in four ejections. He was selected to his third All-Star Game and signed a six-year signature shoe deal with Nike.

International Career

Cunningham won a gold medal representing the United States at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup.
