Tyrese Maxey

Tyrese Maxey

Tyrese Maxey (born November 4, 2000) is an American professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Standing 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) and weighing 200 pounds (91 kg), the Dallas native has transformed from a late-first-round draft steal into one of the most explosive and efficient scoring guards in the world. Known for his blinding speed, infectious “sunny” disposition, and an unparalleled work ethic, Maxey has become the emotional and offensive heartbeat of a Philadelphia franchise consistently contending for a championship.

Maxey is a three-time NBA All-Star and a Most Improved Player award winner. His 2025–26 campaign has seen him reach new heights in playmaking, proving he is not just a secondary “spark plug,” but a primary engine capable of carrying a franchise.

Early Life

Tyrese Maxey was born in Dallas, Texas, to Tyrone and Denise Maxey. His father was a standout player at Washington State and later a coach, providing Tyrese with a rigorous foundation in basketball fundamentals. From a young age, Tyrese adopted the mantra of “getting 1% better every day,” a philosophy that saw him wake up at 5:00 AM for workouts throughout his high school and college years.

At South Garland High School, Maxey was a scoring machine, leading his team to the state semifinals and becoming a consensus five-star recruit. He committed to the University of Kentucky under John Calipari. In his lone season with the Wildcats (2019–20), Maxey demonstrated his “big game” temperament immediately, scoring 26 points in his collegiate debut against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden. Although his season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, he had already done enough to solidify his status as a first-round talent, averaging 14.0 points and providing lockdown perimeter defense.

NBA Career

Philadelphia 76ers (2020-Present)

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Maxey with the 21st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. In hindsight, Maxey is considered one of the greatest value picks in the team’s modern history.

  • Rookie/Sophomore Ascent (2020–2022): Maxey’s opportunity came sooner than expected due to the Ben Simmons holdout and eventual trade. He stepped into the starting point guard role with a fearless attitude. In his second season, he improved his three-point shooting from 30% to over 42%, one of the largest single-season jumps in league history.
  • Most Improved Player (2023–24): Following the trade of James Harden, Maxey was handed the keys to the offense. He blossomed into an All-Star, averaging 25.9 points and 6.2 assists. He was named the NBA Most Improved Player and delivered a historic 50-point game, dedicating the performance to his teammate Joel Embiid.
  • The Maximum Commitment: In July 2024, Maxey signed a five-year, $204 million maximum contract extension with the 76ers. The deal was celebrated throughout the city, as Maxey’s loyalty and joy had made him perhaps the most beloved Philadelphia athlete of his generation.

2025–26 Season: All-Star Mastery

As of February 12, 2026, Tyrese Maxey is in the midst of an MVP-caliber season, leading the 76ers to the third seed in the Eastern Conference (36–17). While Joel Embiid remains the team’s dominant physical force, Maxey has taken over as the primary ball-handler and pace-setter. He was named as an All-Star starter for the first time in his career.

On February 1, 2026, Maxey delivered a masterpiece against the Boston Celtics, recording 42 points and 10 assists without committing a single turnover. This marked his third 40-point game of the season. His speed remains his greatest weapon; he currently leads the NBA in “fast-break points per game,” often beating entire teams down the court for layups before they can set their defense.

Playing style

Maxey’s game is a unique blend of track-star athleticism and surgical shooting. His “floater” is widely considered the best in the league, allowing him to score over rim protectors despite his 6’2″ stature.

  • The Rim Pressure: Maxey’s ability to get from the three-point line to the rim in two dribbles forces defenses to collapse, which creates open looks for teammates like Kelly Oubre Jr. and Paul George.
  • Shot Creation: Once a “streak” shooter, Maxey is now an elite self-creator. He has mastered the “step-back” three-pointer, often using it as a counter when defenders overplay his drive.
  • Defensive Growth: Under coach Nick Nurse, Maxey has utilized his quick feet to become a disruptive on-ball defender. In the 2025–26 season, he is averaging a career-high 1.2 steals per game.

Off-Court and Cultural Impact

Maxey’s impact on the Philadelphia community is profound. His “Maxey Elite” basketball camps and his frequent appearances at local high school games have endeared him to the city. He is known for his signature smile, which he maintains even during high-pressure moments—a trait he credits to his mother’s advice to “always find the joy in the work.”

In 2025, he launched the “Tyrese Maxey Foundation,” which focuses on providing educational resources and sports programs for underprivileged youth in Dallas and Philadelphia. He also has a major partnership with New Balance, serving as a lead athlete for their basketball division and helping design his own upcoming signature colorway for 2026.
