Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid

Joel Hans Embiid (born March 16, 1994) is a Cameroonian and American professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Standing 7 feet (2.13 m) and weighing 280 pounds (127 kg), Embiid plays center and is one of the most dominant offensive and defensive players in the modern NBA. After one year of college basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks, he was drafted third overall by the 76ers in the 2014 NBA draft. Multiple foot and knee injuries delayed his debut for two full seasons until 2016-17, when he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team despite playing only 31 games.

Embiid is the 2022-23 NBA MVP. He is also a seven-time NBA All-Star (2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), a five-time All-NBA Team member, a three-time All-Defensive Team selection, and a two-time NBA scoring champion (2022, 2023). He won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Known for his elite scoring, rebounding, shot-blocking, and surprising ball-handling ability for a center, Embiid has nicknamed himself “The Process” to embrace the era in 76ers history in which he began his career. However, his career has been defined as much by brilliance as by injury struggles, having missed over 400 games since being drafted in 2014.

Early Life

Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon, to parents Thomas and Christine Embiid. His father, Thomas, was a colonel in the Cameroonian military. Embiid grew up with two younger siblings, a brother named Arthur and a sister named Muriel. Tragically, Arthur died in a car accident in 2014 at age 16, shortly after Joel was drafted.

Growing up in Cameroon, Embiid played multiple sports, including volleyball, which he initially hoped to pursue professionally. He did not begin playing basketball until age 15. In 2010, Thomas Embiid met with Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, a fellow native of Yaoundé and former NBA player, to discuss Joel’s future. Mbah a Moute discovered Embiid at a basketball camp and helped facilitate his move to the United States at age 16 to pursue basketball.

High School Career

Embiid initially enrolled at Montverde Academy in Florida but transferred to The Rock School in Gainesville, Florida, after limited playing time. As a senior at The Rock School, Embiid averaged 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game, leading his team to a 33-4 record and a state championship. By the time he finished high school, after just his fourth season playing organized basketball, Embiid was rated as a five-star prospect and considered the top incoming center for college basketball.

College Career

Embiid chose to attend the University of Kansas and play for Hall of Fame coach Bill Self. During his freshman season (2013-14), he started 20 out of 28 games, and averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game while shooting 63% from the field. His dominance drew comparisons to Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. Embiid was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-Big 12.

However, in March 2014, Embiid suffered a stress fracture in his back, causing him to miss the Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament. Kansas lost in the second round without him. On April 9, 2014, Embiid declared for the NBA Draft, forgoing his final three years of college eligibility.

Draft and Initial Injuries (2014–2016)

One week before the 2014 NBA Draft, Embiid underwent surgery on June 20 to repair a broken navicular bone in his right foot, with a recovery timeline of four to six months. Despite the injury, the Philadelphia 76ers selected him third overall on June 26, making him the third Cameroonian-born NBA player and the highest-selected player from Cameroon.

Embiid signed his rookie contract on August 26, 2014, but was ruled out for the entire 2014-15 season. On June 13, 2015, a CT scan revealed less healing than anticipated, and on August 18, 2015, Embiid underwent a second surgery on his right foot. He missed the entire 2015-16 season as well, sitting out two full years before playing his first NBA game.

NBA Debut and Early Success (2016–2018)

On October 26, 2016, Embiid finally made his long-awaited NBA debut against Oklahoma City at age 22. In 25 minutes as the starting center, he recorded 20 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks in a 103-97 loss. Despite a torn meniscus that ended his season in February 2017, Embiid averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in just 31 games, earning All-Rookie First Team honors.

On October 10, 2017, Embiid signed a five-year, $148 million designated rookie maximum contract extension. In 2017-18, he earned his first All-Star selection and All-NBA Second Team honors, averaging 22.9 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 63 games.

The following season (2018-19), Embiid had a breakout year, averaging 27.5 points and 13.6 rebounds, finishing second in rebounding and sixth in blocks per game. He earned his second consecutive All-Star selection and All-NBA Second Team honors. However, illness and knee injury hampered his playoff performance as Philadelphia lost to Toronto in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

MVP Season and Scoring Titles (2019–2023)

In 2019-20, Embiid averaged 23.0 points and 11.6 rebounds, earning his third All-Star selection. The 2020-21 season brought new heights under coach Doc Rivers, who emphasized conditioning. Embiid responded with 28.5 points per game, a career high at the time, and finished second in MVP voting.

In 2021-22, Embiid became the first international player to win the NBA scoring title, averaging 30.6 points per game along with 11.7 rebounds. He finished second in MVP voting behind Nikola Jokić.

The 2022-23 season delivered Embiid’s ultimate individual achievement. He won his second consecutive scoring title with 33.1 points per game while adding 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.7 blocks. On May 2, 2023, Embiid was named NBA Most Valuable Player, becoming the fifth 76er to win MVP, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Allen Iverson, and Moses Malone. He joined James Harden as the first pair of teammates to lead the NBA in scoring and assists in a season since George Gervin and Johnny Moore in 1981-82.

Record-Breaking Performance and Recent Struggles (2023–Present)

On January 22, 2024, Embiid scored 70 points against San Antonio, setting a franchise record and becoming just the ninth player in NBA history to score 70+ points in a game. On April 4, 2024, he scored 52 points on 20-of-25 shooting with 13 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks against Boston, becoming only the second player in NBA history with a 50-10-5 game while shooting 80% or better.

However, injury struggles intensified. Embiid suffered a meniscal flap tear in his left knee in late January 2024 and missed significant time. After returning for the playoffs, he was afflicted with Bell’s palsy during the postseason. The 2023-24 season ended with just 39 regular-season appearances, his lowest total in a non-injured season since his debut year.

The 2025-26 season has been similarly challenging. Through the season, Embiid has been listed as questionable or out for numerous games due to right knee injury management. He was shut down in early February to ensure he reaches the All-Star break healthy. When active, Embiid has been dominant, averaging 31.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 5.2 assists.

Throughout his career, Embiid has missed over 400 games due to various injuries, including navicular bone fractures, meniscus tears, bone bruises, orbital fractures, Bell’s palsy, concussions, and chronic knee issues. He has played in approximately 47% of possible NBA games since being drafted.

International Career

Embiid represented Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics after becoming an American citizen and winning a gold medal. He had previously competed for Cameroon at youth levels.

Personal Life

Embiid has been in a relationship with Brazilian model Anne de Paula since 2018. He is known for his charismatic personality, trash-talking, and social media presence. Embiid speaks French and English fluently.

Despite his injury struggles, Embiid is considered one of the most skilled centers in NBA history, capable of dominating inside while also possessing guard-like ball-handling and a reliable three-point shot. He has often stated, “I believe I can do anything on the basketball floor. You ask me to be a scorer, I’ll be a scorer. You ask me to be a playmaker, I’ll be a playmaker.
