Nikola Jokić

Nikola Jokić

Nikola Jokić (born February 19, 1995) is a Serbian professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed “the Joker,” he is widely considered one of the most uniquely gifted centers in the history of the sport. Sitting at second on the all-time triple-double leaderboard, Jokic has often been called the greatest offensive player in the history of the sport.

Standing 6 feet 11 inches (2.11 m) and weighing 284 pounds (129 kg), he has redefined the traditional big man role through his elite passing, high basketball IQ, and statistical dominance. Jokić has won three NBA MVP awards, one NBA championship, 7 All-NBA team selections, and 8 All-Star team selections.

Early Life

Jokić was born in Sombor, Serbia, a city in the northern province of Vojvodina. He grew up in a two-bedroom apartment with his parents, grandmother, and two older brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja. While his brothers were physical and competitive basketball players, Nikola was a self-described “fat kid” who preferred the stable to the court. His first love was harness racing, a sport he began at age 12 and still pursues today through his “Dream Catcher” stable.

His basketball journey began at Vojvodina Srbijagas, where he first displayed the vision and “water polo” passing style that would later define his NBA career. In 2012, at age 17, he signed with Mega Vizura (now Mega Basket) in Belgrade. Despite his lack of traditional vertical athleticism, he dominated the Adriatic League (ABA), winning the 2014–15 ABA League MVP and leading the league in rebounding. His ability to facilitate the offense as a 7-footer made him an anomaly in European basketball, drawing the attention of Denver Nuggets scouts.

NBA Draft Night: The Taco Bell Commercial

The 2014 NBA Draft provided one of the most famous anecdotes in sports history. On June 26, 2014, the Denver Nuggets selected Jokić with the 41st overall pick. Because he was a relatively unknown second-round prospect from Europe, the ESPN broadcast was airing a commercial for Taco Bell’s “Quesarito” when his selection was announced via a scrolling ticker at the bottom of the screen. Jokić himself was asleep in Sombor when the call came; he famously didn’t believe his brother when told he had been drafted. This humble beginning as a late second-round pick makes him the lowest-drafted player in NBA history to ever win the MVP award.

NBA Career

Denver Nuggets (2015- Present)

Jokić arrived in Denver for the 2015–16 season. Despite being a second-round pick, he immediately displayed his value, averaging 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds as a rookie to earn NBA All-Rookie First Team honors. The Nuggets’ coaching staff, led by Michael Malone, quickly realized that the team’s offense functioned best when the ball moved through Jokić.

By his sophomore season, the “Jokić effect” was undeniable. On February 15, 2018, he recorded a triple-double in just 14 minutes and 33 seconds against the Milwaukee Bucks, shattering the record for the fastest triple-double in NBA history. During this period, he transitioned from a backup center to the undisputed franchise cornerstone, leading the Nuggets to their first winning record in five seasons in 2017–18.

First Breakthrough: The 2020 Western Conference Finals

The 2019–20 season served as Denver’s official arrival as a title contender. In the Orlando Bubble, Jokić’s conditioning reached a new level, allowing him to play heavy minutes in high-stakes environments. The Nuggets’ run to the Western Conference Finals solidified Jokić as a superstar. Even in a series loss to the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers, Jokić proved he could dominate elite defenders like Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard on the game’s biggest stage.

The MVP Years: Consecutive Dominance (2021–2022)

From 2020 to 2022, Jokić entered a period of individual statistical production that had never been seen from a center.

  • 2020–21 MVP: Jokić won his first MVP by averaging 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.3 assists. He played all 72 games, showing a durability that earned him the “Ironman” moniker.
  • 2021–22 MVP: Following Jamal Murray’s ACL injury, Jokić carried a depleted roster to the playoffs. He became the first player in history to join the 2000-1000-500 club (points, rebounds, and assists in one season). He also set the all-time record for Player Efficiency Rating (PER) at 32.85.

He won back-to-back NBA MVP awards. However, playoff success eluded him and the Nuggets.

Championship Glory: The 2023 Title and Finals MVP

The 2022–23 season was the culmination of Jokić’s career goals. With a healthy Murray and Michael Porter Jr., the Nuggets finished as the #1 seed in the West. In the playoffs, Jokić was a force of nature, recording 10 triple-doubles, breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s 56-year-old record for most in a single postseason.

In the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat, Jokić averaged 30.2 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 7.2 assists. After the Game 5 victory, his humble reaction, “The job is done, we can go home now,” went viral, highlighting his professional, work-first approach to the game. He was unanimously named the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP, the first center to win the award since Shaquille O’Neal in 2002.

Third MVP and the 2024–25 Season

Jokić reclaimed the Michael Jordan Trophy in 2023–24, winning his third MVP in four years. He joined an elite list of legends (including Jordan, LeBron James, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) with at least three MVPs.

The 2024–25 season saw Jokić reach his statistical apex. He became only the third player in history (and the first center) to average a triple-double for a full season, posting 29.6 PPG, 12.7 RPG, and 10.2 APG. Despite his individual brilliance, a second championship eluded Denver in 2025, fueling his “subsequent hunt” for a second ring.

2025–26: The Subsequent Hunt and History in February

On February 11, 2026, against the Memphis Grizzlies, Jokić recorded 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists, marking his fourth consecutive triple-double. Just days prior, on February 7, he recorded 17 assists in a win over Chicago to officially pass Oscar Robertson for second place all-time in regular-season triple-doubles (184 and counting). He now trails only Russell Westbrook (207) for the all-time crown. He also recorded a 61-point triple-double this season, breaking James Harden and Luka Doncic’s record for most points scored in a tripledouble.

  • Season PER Record: 32.85 (Highest in NBA history)
  • Postseason Dominance: First player to lead a postseason in total points, rebounds, and assists.
  • Triple-Double Season: First center to average a triple-double in a season (2024–25).

Personal Life and Legacy

Off the court, Jokić remains a private and unassuming figure. He married his high school sweetheart, Natalija Mačešić, in 2020. She moved to the United States with him and is a practicing psychologist. They have a daughter, Ognjena, born in 2021.

Jokić’s primary hobby remains horse racing. He owns several racehorses and frequently visits the track during the off-season in Sombor. His perspective on basketball is famously grounded; he has often stated that he views it as a job and that “there are many more important things in life than basketball.” This authenticity has made him one of the most beloved figures in sports, as he represents a bridge between old-school fundamentals and modern statistical dominance.
