Alex Michael Caruso (born February 28, 1994) is an American professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Texas A&M Aggies, earning second-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors as a senior in 2016. Caruso is a two-time NBA champion, winning titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2025. He is widely regarded by analysts and fellow players as one of the greatest and most versatile defenders of his generation, earning NBA All-Defensive Team honors in 2023 (First Team) and 2024 (Second Team).
Standing 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) and weighing 186 pounds (84 kg), Caruso is known for his exceptional defensive instincts, ability to seamlessly switch across multiple positions, and leadership qualities. His journey from undrafted free agent to two-time champion has made him a fan favorite and one of the NBA’s most respected role players. Popular nicknames include “Bald Mamba,” “Bald Eagle,” “Carushow,” and “The Accountant.”
Caruso was born in College Station, Texas, the son of Mike and Jackie Caruso. He has two sisters, Megan (older) and Emily (younger). His father played basketball at Creighton University for four years and later served as an associate athletic director at Texas A&M, giving Alex early exposure to high-level basketball.
Caruso attended A&M Consolidated High School in College Station, where he played under head coaches Rusty Segler and Rick German. As a senior, he averaged 18 points and 9 rebounds per game, earning TABC All-State, TABC All-Regional, and TABC All-Star honors. He received invitations to the prestigious Pangos All-American Camp and NBA Players Association Camp.
Caruso spent four seasons (2012-2016) at Texas A&M University, where he became one of the program’s most accomplished players. He grew up around the Aggies program, having spent many seasons as a ball boy while his father worked in the athletic department.
In his senior season (2015-16), Caruso was named All-SEC Second Team and SEC All-Defensive Team. He started all 37 games, averaging 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. He ranked first in the SEC in steals and fourth in assists.
Caruso concluded his Texas A&M career as the program’s all-time leader in both assists (649) and steals (276). He posted 46 double-figure scoring games, including six games with 20 or more points. He graduated with a degree in Sports Management.
After going undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, Caruso joined the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2016 NBA Summer League. On September 23, 2016, he signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder but was waived on October 17 after less than a month. On November 3, he was acquired by the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA Development League (now G League), beginning his professional journey at the sport’s developmental level.
Caruso joined the Lakers for the 2017 NBA Summer League and helped lead them to the championship in Las Vegas. After several productive performances, including starting in place of injured Lonzo Ball, he signed the Lakers’ first two-way contract on July 13, 2017, becoming the first player to go directly from the D-League to the NBA via a two-way contract.
He made his NBA debut on October 19, 2017, against the Los Angeles Clippers, recording 2 points, 2 assists, and 1 rebound in 12 minutes. Over the next several seasons, Caruso established himself as a valuable role player known for hustle plays and defensive excellence.
On July 6, 2019, Caruso signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Lakers. The 2019-20 season proved transformative. During a January 2020 game against the Clippers, he scored a career-high 32 points in a victory, becoming the only Laker that season besides LeBron James to record a 30+ points, 10+ rebounds, 5+ assists game.
The Lakers won the 2020 NBA championship, defeating the Miami Heat in six games in the NBA bubble. Caruso started the title-clinching Game 6, recording 4 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block while finishing with a game-best +20 in 33 minutes. He averaged 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.1 steals in 24.3 minutes per game across 21 playoff appearances.
LeBron James called Caruso “one of my favorite teammates of all time,” a sentiment that reflected his value beyond statistics.
After becoming an unrestricted free agent, Caruso signed a four-year, $37 million contract with the Chicago Bulls on August 10, 2021. He wore number 6, as his usual number 4 had been retired in honor of Jerry Sloan.
On January 21, 2022, during a game against Milwaukee, Caruso was hard-fouled by Grayson Allen, resulting in a fractured right wrist that required surgery and cost him 6-8 weeks. Despite the setback, Caruso flourished defensively in Chicago.
In the 2022-23 season, Caruso led the NBA in deflections per game (3.7) while ranking second in total deflections (265) and third in steals per game (1.7). He was the only player with at least 100 steals and 70 blocks. At season’s end, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team for the first time.
During the 2023-24 season, Caruso set career highs in total minutes (2,040), points (715), field goals made (253), three-pointers made (136), steals (120), and blocks (40). He scored a season-high 23 points against Indiana on March 13, 2024. His 17-game streak with at least one block (December 30-February 6) marked the longest by any NBA guard or forward that season. He was later named to the All-Defensive Second Team.
On June 21, 2024, Caruso was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Josh Giddey. The trade reunited him with coach Mark Daigneault, who had coached him with the Oklahoma City Blue. On December 22, 2024, Caruso and the Thunder agreed to a four-year, $81 million contract extension.
In his first season with Oklahoma City, Caruso played a crucial role in the Thunder’s championship run. He averaged 9.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2.0 steals in the playoffs while shooting 41.1% from three-point range.
During the NBA Finals against Indiana, Caruso had historic performances, scoring 20 points in both Game 2 and Game 4; both Thunder victories. His Game 4 performance made him the first player in Finals history to record 20 points and 5 steals off the bench. He averaged 10.1 points and 3.6 rebounds across the seven-game series.
After the championship-clinching Game 7 victory, Caruso joked, “Now I got a real one. Now nobody can say anything,” referencing critics who diminished the Lakers’ 2020 bubble championship. He later clarified he was joking and wore his 2020 Lakers championship ring as a necklace during the Thunder’s championship parade.
As of February 2026, Caruso continues to provide elite defense and veteran leadership for the defending champion Thunder. He has dealt with a right adductor injury but remains a critical component of Oklahoma City’s rotation.
Caruso is of Italian descent and remains close with his family in Texas. He lists ping pong as a favorite off-court activity and has referenced getting signed by the Lakers as his greatest personal achievement. He is active on Instagram at @acfresh21.
