Evan Mobley (born June 18, 2001) is an American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A versatile 6-foot-11 power forward and center, Mobley is widely regarded as one of the most impactful defensive forces of his generation. His rapid ascent culminated in the 2024–25 season, where he was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) and an NBA All-Star for the first time.
Known for his “unicorn” skill set, possessing the agility of a guard with the rim-protecting instincts of a traditional center, Mobley has become the cornerstone of a Cleveland franchise that returned to prominence following his arrival.
Evan Mobley was born in San Diego, California, into a family with a deep basketball pedigree. His father, Eric Mobley, played professionally overseas and later became an assistant coach at the University of Southern California (USC). His mother, Nicol, and his older brother, Isaiah Mobley, were also integral to his development.
The Mobley brothers grew up playing together, eventually becoming one of the most formidable high school and college duos in the country. Evan’s quiet intensity and natural fluidity on the court were evident from a young age, as he often played against older competition to sharpen his instincts.
Mobley attended Rancho Christian School in Temecula, California, where he emerged as a five-star recruit and one of the top prospects in the class of 2020.
Mobley spent one historic season at USC (2020–2021). He became just the second player from a major conference (joining Anthony Davis) to win Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Freshman of the Year in the same season.
The Cavaliers selected Mobley with the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He made an immediate impact, finishing as the runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award in 2022 behind Scottie Barnes. Alongside Jarrett Allen, Mobley transformed the Cavaliers’ defense into one of the league’s top-five units.
In his second season (2022–23), he earned All-Defensive First Team honors, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to do so. While his third season (2023–24) was interrupted by knee surgery, he returned to form late in the year to help Cleveland secure a playoff series victory.
The 2024–25 season was a landmark campaign for Mobley. Under new head coach Kenny Atkinson, Mobley took on a larger role in the offense while continuing his defensive dominance.
As of 2026, Mobley continues to lead the Cavaliers in their pursuit of a championship. Through 42 games this season, he is averaging 17.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game. His playmaking has seen a significant jump, with a career-high assist average.
Mobley recently overcame a minor calf strain in late January that sidelined him for approximately two weeks. Since returning, he has put up notable performances, including a 29-point, 13-rebound effort against the Sacramento Kings on January 23, 2026.
Mobley has been a staple of USA Basketball at the youth levels. He won gold medals with the United States at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup and the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. He is currently considered a primary candidate for the senior national team roster for upcoming major tournaments.
Mobley is known for his soft-spoken and humble personality, often referred to as “the quiet storm” by teammates. He maintains a close bond with his brother, Isaiah, who also played for the Cavaliers organization. Outside of basketball, Mobley is involved in various community initiatives in Cleveland, focusing on youth sports and educational programs.
