Isaiah Hartenstein (born May 5, 1998) is a German-American professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A versatile 7-foot center, Hartenstein has evolved from a second-round pick into one of the league’s most effective two-way big men. He is currently coming off a historic 2024–25 campaign where he served as a vital piece of the Thunder’s 2025 NBA Championship run.
Hartenstein was born in Eugene, Oregon, to Florian and Theresa Hartenstein. His father, Florian, was a standout at the University of Oregon before playing professionally in Germany for over a decade. Isaiah is of mixed heritage; his mother is a white American, while his father is of Black and German descent.
In 2008, when Isaiah was ten, the family moved to Germany for his father’s career. It was there that Isaiah’s own basketball journey accelerated. Under his father’s coaching in the Artland Dragons youth system, he dominated junior leagues, leading the U16 team to a German championship in 2014 while earning MVP honors.
Unlike many American-born prospects, Hartenstein took the European professional route.
Hartenstein’s early NBA years were spent as a journeyman, with stints in Houston, Denver, Cleveland, and with the Los Angeles Clippers. His career took a major leap when he signed with the New York Knicks in 2022. In New York, he became a defensive anchor and an elite offensive rebounder. During the 2023–24 season, he stepped into the starting lineup for an injured Mitchell Robinson, helping the Knicks reach the second round of the playoffs and establishing himself as one of the best “non-star” impact players in the league.
In July 2024, Hartenstein signed a massive three-year, $87 million contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The move paid immediate dividends, as Hartenstein provided the interior size and toughness the Thunder needed. He averaged a double-double in the 2024–25 regular season and played a crucial role in Oklahoma City winning the 2025 NBA title.
On February 3, 2026, Hartenstein recorded his first career triple-double in a 128–92 victory over the Orlando Magic, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in just 23 minutes. This achievement followed a 16-game absence due to a right calf injury.
Hartenstein identifies closely with his German-American roots and has represented the German National Team in international competition, including EuroBasket 2017. He is known for his unique “bright skin” humor regarding his heritage and maintains a close relationship with his father, who continues to influence his game. In late 2024, Hartenstein and his father became investors in the German basketball club Ratiopharm Ulm.
