Nickeil Alexander-Walker (born September 2, 1998) is a Canadian professional basketball player who plays for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Standing 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) and weighing 205 pounds (93 kg), Alexander-Walker is a versatile guard recognized for his elite perimeter defense and three-point shooting. 

After playing two seasons of college basketball for the Virginia Tech Hokies, he was selected 17th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. Following tenures with the New Orleans Pelicans, Utah Jazz, and Minnesota Timberwolves, Alexander-Walker signed a lucrative extension in 2025 and has since established himself as a primary offensive option in Atlanta.

Early Life 

High School Career

Alexander-Walker was born in Toronto, Ontario, and grew up in a basketball-oriented family. He is the cousin of fellow NBA superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and the two were frequent teammates during their youth. He began his high school career at Vaughan Secondary School in Ontario before moving to the United States to seek stiffer competition. He attended St. Louis Christian Academy and later Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During his senior year at Hamilton Heights, Alexander-Walker emerged as a top recruit, known for his combination of size and playmaking ability as a combo guard.

College Career

Alexander-Walker committed to Virginia Tech, where he made an immediate impact as a freshman. He averaged 10.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, helping the Hokies secure an NCAA Tournament berth. 

In his sophomore season (2018–19), his production increased significantly as he averaged 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 47.4% from the field. He led Virginia Tech to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1967 and was named to the All-ACC Third Team. Following the season, he declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

New Orleans Pelicans (2019–2022)

On June 20, 2019, Alexander-Walker was selected 17th overall by the Brooklyn Nets, though his draft rights were quickly traded to New Orleans via Atlanta. He debuted on October 22, 2019, and quickly showed flashes of brilliance, including a then-career-high 37 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on January 13, 2021. However, he struggled with consistency in his shooting efficiency during his early years with the Pelicans.

Utah Jazz (2022–2023)

On February 8, 2022, Alexander-Walker was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers and subsequently moved to the Utah Jazz a day later in a three-team trade. He played a reserve role in Utah, focusing on improving his defensive footwork and catch-and-shoot mechanics.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2023–2025)

On February 9, 2023, Alexander-Walker was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. This move proved to be the turning point of his career. Under coach Chris Finch, he reinvented himself as a “three-and-D” specialist. He became a fan favorite in Minneapolis, particularly during the 2024 NBA Playoffs, where he was tasked with guarding elite opponents like Jamal Murray and Kevin Durant. He played in all 82 games during the 2024–25 season, establishing himself as one of the most reliable bench players in the league.

Atlanta Hawks (2025–present)

In July 2025, the Atlanta Hawks acquired Alexander-Walker in a sign-and-trade deal with Minnesota. He signed a four-year, $62 million contract, marking the largest deal of his career. Transitioning into a full-time starter for the Hawks, he has experienced a statistical breakout. On November 20, 2025, he set a new career-high with 38 points against the San Antonio Spurs, including eight three-pointers.

On February 9, 2026, Alexander-Walker returned to the Target Center to face his former team, receiving a 90-second tribute video and a standing ovation from the Minnesota crowd. He recorded 23 points and 12 rebounds in the game, demonstrating the growth that has seen him average 19.9 points per game through the 2025–26 season.

International Career

Alexander-Walker has been a mainstay for the Canadian national team. He represented Canada at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in securing the bronze medal, the first World Cup medal in the program’s history. He also competed for Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
