Onyeka Okongwu

Onyeka Okongwu (born December 11, 2000) is an American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks. Known for his elite rim protection and defensive mobility, the 6-foot-10 “Big O” has transitioned from a high-energy substitute to a vital multi-faceted starter. As of February 2026, he is having a career-best season, demonstrating an expanded offensive game that includes consistent perimeter shooting.

Early Life

High School

Born in Los Angeles to Nigerian parents, Okongwu rose to national prominence at Chino Hills High School. He was a cornerstone of the legendary 2015-16 team that went 35-0, playing alongside Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo Ball. While the Ball brothers garnered the headlines, Okongwu provided the defensive backbone. He became one of the most decorated players in California history, leading Chino Hills to three state titles and becoming a two-time California Mr. Basketball (2018, 2019), joining an elite group of back-to-back winners.

College Career

Okongwu played one season at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2019-20. He was instantly the Trojans’ best player, averaging 16.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks. His defensive efficiency was historic; he set a USC freshman record with 76 blocks in just 28 games. Following a First-team All-Pac-12 campaign, he was selected 6th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2020 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

Atlanta Hawks (2020- Present)

In his early years with the Hawks, Okongwu served as a high-impact backup to Clint Capela. His defensive versatility allowed Atlanta to switch screens more effectively, making him a “Giannis-stopper” in the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals. Recognizing his long-term potential, the Hawks signed him to a four-year, $62 million extension in October 2023.

The 2025-26 season has seen Okongwu reach a new statistical apex. On November 13, 2025, he made NBA history against the Utah Jazz by recording 32 points and 8 three-pointers. He became just the third player in league history (alongside LeBron James and James Harden) to record at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks, and 8 triples in a single game. As of February 12, 2026, he is averaging a career-high 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.

Personal Life and Legacy

Okongwu’s motivation is deeply rooted in family. His older brother, Nnamdi, was his basketball inspiration but tragically passed away in 2014 following a skateboarding accident. Onyeka wears the number 17 in his honor, the age Nnamdi was when he died. Off the court, Okongwu is known for his humble demeanor and work ethic, qualities that have made him a franchise cornerstone in Atlanta’s quest for a championship.
