Rui Hachimura (born February 8, 1998) is a Japanese professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Standing 6 feet 8 inches and weighing 230 pounds, the versatile forward has become a global icon, bridging the gap between Japanese culture and the world’s premier basketball league. As of February 2026, Hachimura continues to be a vital scoring threat and defensive presence for a Lakers squad navigating a competitive Western Conference.
Born in Toyama, Japan, to a Japanese mother (Makiki) and a Beninese father (Zakari Jabil), Hachimura is one of Japan’s most famous “hafu” (biracial) athletes. His name, “Rui,” was chosen by his grandfather because the Japanese character represents “base,” a nod to the family’s love for baseball. Appropriately, Hachimura’s first athletic passion was baseball, where he excelled as a pitcher and catcher.
He pivoted to basketball in middle school and quickly dominated the Japanese youth circuit. At Meisei High School, he led his team to three consecutive All-Japan High School Tournament titles. His performance caught the eye of international scouts, eventually leading him to the United States to pursue a collegiate career.
Hachimura played three seasons for the Gonzaga Bulldogs (2016–2019). He arrived in Spokane with limited English but left as a consensus first-team All-American.
The Washington Wizards selected Hachimura with the 9th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, making him the first Japanese player ever taken in the first round.
Hachimura is the undisputed face of the Japan national team. He was a flag bearer for Japan during the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and led the team in scoring during both the Tokyo and Paris 2024 Olympics, where he averaged 22.0 points per game.
Beyond the court, Hachimura has transformed the marketing landscape for NBA players in Asia, holding major endorsements with Jordan Brand, Nissin Foods, and Casio. He is a trailblazer for biracial youth in Japan, often speaking about the challenges and pride associated with his dual heritage.
