Toumani Camara

Toumani Camara (born May 8, 2000) is a Belgian professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers. Standing 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m) with a 7-foot-1 wingspan, the Brussels native has rapidly ascended from a second-round “sleeper” to one of the NBA’s premier perimeter defenders and a core piece of Portland’s future.

Early Life 

College Career

Camara was raised in Brussels by his mother, Anne Le Docte, and developed his passion for basketball by watching NCAA tournament games on Belgian television. At age 16, he moved to the United States to attend Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Florida, where he evolved into a four-star recruit.

His college journey began at the University of Georgia (2019–2021), where he showed flashes of two-way potential. Seeking a specialized defensive system, he transferred to Dayton (2021–2023). Under coach Anthony Grant, Camara became an All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection and an elite multi-positional defender. He led the A-10 in rebounding (8.6 rpg) during his senior year, cementing his draft stock.

NBA Career

Portland Trail Blazers (2023-Present) 

Selected 52nd overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2023 NBA Draft, Camara was traded to the Trail Blazers just months later as part of the blockbuster three-team deal involving Damian Lillard.

• Rookie Season (2023–24): Camara surprised the league by becoming a day-one starter for Portland. His rookie campaign was cut short in March 2024 by a fractured rib and kidney laceration, but his impact was already clear.
• Sophomore Breakout (2024–25): Fully recovered, Camara blossomed into a defensive powerhouse. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2025, a rare feat for a second-year player drafted in the late second round.

2025–26 Season: Current Status

As of February 12, 2026, Camara is having his most efficient offensive season while maintaining his “lockdown” reputation. He is currently averaging 13.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.

His standout moment of the season occurred on February 9, 2026, in a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Camara exploded for a career-high 30 points, shooting a remarkable 8-of-10 from three-point range. This performance underscored his evolution from a “defensive specialist” into a true 3-and-D threat. In late January 2026, he enjoyed a streak of five consecutive games with 16+ points, shooting over 50% from the field and deep.

Camara’s game is defined by relentless physicality. He is often assigned the opponent’s best scorer, whether it be a point guard or a power forward.
